Course Reflection Prompts
Respond to the following questions on your wiki.
1. What outcomes had you envisioned for this course? Did you achieve those outcomes? Did the actual course outcomes align with those that you envisioned?
Before taking this course, I had envisioned learning how to use a major video editing program in detail to create a video. Although we did use some universal editing programs, I was already familiar with them and had expected to use some more advanced programs. Because I had already created several videos already, my experience using the editing programs and doing my own research had already presented me with lots of the information covered in the course. I would say that the outcome was not entirely achieved primarily because my expectations of the course were different than what was actually presented. Even though this was the case, I enjoyed the course and working with others in my group to create our final video project. Working together to collaborate, outline our video shots, edit, and upload our final video was extremely fun and allowed everyone to contribute to the final product.
2. To the extent that you achieved the outcomes, are they still relevant to the work that you do in your school? Why or why not?
The outcomes achieved while taking this course are very relevant because they are the skills that students today need to learn to create their own personal videos, as well as videos for school projects and the work place. The entire learning process of planning, storyboarding, researching, creating, collaborating, producing, and editing the video are important. In fact, these are elements that I already present to my students.
For our final project, we had to work together in group to create a final video project. This is an important element that students will need to grasp and be comfortable with as they continue with their schooling and into the work force. Trusting your teammates to do their job so that you can do yours is a huge part of a successful team dynamic. The more students are able to work in a setting like that with a variety of different people, the more they will become familiar with that concept of producing work and produce better quality work in the process.
3. What outcomes did you not achieve? What prevented you from achieving them?
I may have had higher expectations coming into this class because I did not learn as much from this class that I thought I would. I already knew had to create videos using all of the video programs presented and I knew had to use the audio editing and recording programs as well. The outcomes that were not achieved were to delve into a more powerful editing program like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro and really learn the “ins and outs” of the program. I realize that we only have a short amount of time for each course, however, several of our required readings were basically tutorials that either I had already read or had access to if I needed them. In addition, the programs that we used were entry level programs that I have used for years and have become very familiar with using. Even thought we did not venture into a more professional editing video editing program, I enjoyed being able to create the video projects in our course.
4. Were you successful in completing the course assignments? If not, what prevented or discouraged you?
I was very successful completing all of the course assignments. I had fun and enjoyed working with my classmates for our final PSA video project. To be able to work with video, still images, sound effects, music, video effects, text effects, and transitions to create a video is very enjoyable for me. So, to be able to do that on three different occasions for our course assignments was all the more fun. Although I am used to creating much, much longer videos the course assignments were entertaining and provided me with an opportunity to continue to express my ideas, thoughts, and creativity in several different outlets. I really enjoyed being able to work with fellow classmates from different areas of the state in our final video PSA project. Since were are all online, we don’t usually get to meet our classmates, but this assignment allowed us to meet online in a video chat format to discuss our video outline, shot list, and final video order.
5. What did you learn from this course: about yourself, your technology and leadership skills, and your attitudes?
This course presented lots of great learning opportunities. I learned that I truly enjoy producing, directing, and editing videos. I think that I could have been in the Hollywood scene working on a huge mega-hit movie like “Lord of the Rings”. I truly enjoy the entire video making process and want to be a part of each one (i.e. filming, audio voice overs, editing, shot list, sound effects, background music, etc.). My technology skills had already prepared me for this course and all the skills that I needed to do to create our video assignments. I learned a lot about my leadership skills, too. I had to communicate effectively and positively in both written format and in our live video chats. I had to talk one on one and in a group setting. My attitude for the entire course was positive. I will finish this course with it being one of my favorites.
